Cola is one of the most popular soft drinks in the world, and it is also one of the biggest single sources of added sugar in many people's diets. A standard 330 ml can of regular cola contains roughly 140 calories and 35 grams of sugar — about nine teaspoons. But the numbers change depending on the brand, the sweetener used, and the serving size you pour.
This cola calorie calculator lets you estimate the calories and sugar in any serving size, from a small glass to a 2-liter bottle. Choose between regular, cane-sugar, diet, or custom cola values; select milliliters, fluid ounces, cups, or liters; and optionally add your body weight to see how many minutes of walking or running would burn off the drink.
Use it for daily calorie tracking, meal planning, or simply to make more informed drink choices.

Step-by-Step Guide
- Choose your cola type. Regular and cane-sugar colas have similar calorie counts; diet and zero versions contain almost none. Pick Custom to enter values for an imported or boutique brand.
- Enter your serving size. Type the amount and select the unit — milliliters, fluid ounces, cups, or liters. Quick-fill buttons cover common container sizes.
- Add body weight (optional). This powers the exercise estimates. Leave it blank to use a 70 kg (155 lb) reference.
- Press Calculate. Review total calories, sugar grams, teaspoons, percent of the daily sugar limit, and estimated walking and running times.
How the Calculation Works
The calculator starts with a typical energy density for each cola type — kilocalories and grams of sugar per 100 ml — then converts your serving to milliliters and applies these formulas:
Sugar = (volume in ml ÷ 100) × sugar grams per 100 ml
Teaspoons = sugar grams ÷ 4.2 g per teaspoon
% daily value = sugar grams ÷ 50 g × 100
Exercise time uses metabolic equivalents (METs): about 4.0 MET for a brisk walk and 9.8 MET for a run, in the standard formula minutes = kcal ÷ (MET × 3.5 × weight in kg ÷ 200). Heavier individuals burn more calories per minute at the same pace, so their exercise times come out shorter.
Worked Examples
Standard Cola Values
Values vary slightly between brands and countries (some markets use cane sugar instead of high-fructose corn syrup). These are typical figures per 100 ml.
| Cola type | Calories (kcal) | Sugar (g) |
|---|---|---|
| Regular (HFCS) | 42 | 10.6 |
| Cane-sugar | 43 | 11.0 |
| Diet / zero | 0.4 | 0.0 |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Confusing bottles with servings. A 2-liter bottle equals roughly six 330 ml cans — about 830 kcal and 210 g of sugar if you finish it alone.
- Assuming cane-sugar cola is healthier. Cane sugar and HFCS deliver nearly identical calories and sugar per serving.
- Rounding diet cola to exactly zero. Most diet colas carry a trace of energy (~0.4 kcal per 100 ml) — negligible, but not literally zero.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many calories are in a can of cola? A 330 ml can of regular cola contains about 139 kcal and 35 g of sugar; a 355 ml can is closer to 149 kcal.
What is the daily limit for added sugar? The FDA reference on Nutrition Facts labels is 50 g of added sugar per day for a 2,000-calorie diet. The World Health Organization recommends keeping added sugars below 10% of total energy, ideally under 5%.
Can diet cola help with weight loss? Swapping regular for diet cuts calories dramatically, though long-term research is mixed. Treat it as one tool within an overall balanced diet.
