How the Calculation Works

The calculator works in three stages. First, it converts your serving size into milliliters so every volume can be compared on the same scale. The conversion factors used are 1 US fl oz = 29.5735 ml, 1 US cup = 236.588 ml, and 1 L = 1000 ml; milliliter entries are used as-is.

Second, it multiplies the volume by the vitamin C density of the selected juice:

Vitamin C (mg) = Serving (ml) × Vitamin C per 100 ml ÷ 100

Finally, it divides by the FDA Daily Value of 90 mg and multiplies by 100 to express the result as a percentage:

The built-in averages come from USDA FoodData Central records for raw and commercial juices. Because vitamin C is sensitive to heat, light and oxygen, real values depend on fruit ripeness, variety, season, pasteurization, and how long the container has been open.

Worked Examples

Example 1 — Orange juice glass: Pour a 240 ml glass of orange juice (50 mg per 100 ml). Vitamin C = 240 × 50 ÷ 100 = 120 mg. As a percentage: 120 ÷ 90 × 100 = 133% of the Daily Value — one glass covers more than a full day's target.
Example 2 — Cranberry cocktail bottle: A 350 ml bottle of cranberry juice cocktail (25 mg per 100 ml) provides 350 × 25 ÷ 100 = 87.5 mg, which equals 87.5 ÷ 90 × 100 = 97% of the Daily Value — just short of one day's need.
Example 3 — Custom label in ounces: Your label lists 35 mg per 100 ml and you drink 8 fl oz. Convert first: 8 × 29.5735 = 236.6 ml. Then vitamin C = 236.6 × 35 ÷ 100 = 82.8 mg, or 82.8 ÷ 90 × 100 = 92% of the Daily Value.

Natural averages only — fortified, blended or "light" juices can differ substantially. Citrus juices are the richest natural sources, while apple and grape juice contain only traces.

  • Drink freshly squeezed juice soon after making it — vitamin C begins to degrade on contact with air, and heat and light accelerate the loss.
  • Refrigerate opened juice and finish it within a few days. The longer a container sits, the lower the vitamin C level becomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my juice label show more vitamin C than the calculator? Many commercial juices are fortified with added ascorbic acid, pushing levels to 60–100 mg per 100 ml or higher. The built-in values reflect natural vitamin C only, so a fortified product will always exceed them.

Is 90 mg the right Daily Value for me? The FDA uses 90 mg as the Daily Value for adults and children aged 4 and older, which is the benchmark this calculator reports. Individual recommendations differ: the National Institutes of Health suggest 75 mg per day for adult women and 90 mg for adult men, with more during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Does pasteurization destroy vitamin C? Partially. Heat reduces vitamin C content, which is one reason fresh-squeezed juice usually contains more than shelf-stable bottled juice from the same fruit. Refrigerated "not from concentrate" juices typically fall somewhere in between.

Why do two brands of orange juice give different results? Vitamin C varies with orange variety, ripeness at harvest, climate, processing temperature and storage time. USDA averages describe typical juice, not every carton.
