Why Per 100 g Is the Standard

Nutrition labels list carbohydrates per serving, but serving sizes are not standardized. A portion of fries can be 80 g in one restaurant and 150 g in another, while a slice of baguette can range from 30 g to 60 g. Comparing those numbers directly is misleading. Per 100 g is the standard reference used by food databases such as USDA FoodData Central, by European nutrition labels, and by the ANSES Ciqual table in France.

How the Calculation Works

The calculator uses a simple proportion:

Carbs per 100 g = (carbs in serving ÷ serving weight) × 100

Why multiply by 100? Because “per 100 g” means the amount in a hypothetical 100 g portion that has exactly the same carbohydrate density as the food you measured. If your label reports 32 g of carbs in a 120 g serving, each gram of that food contains 32 ÷ 120 = 0.267 g of carbohydrate, so 100 g contains 26.7 g.

Worked example
Label: 50 g baguette slice contains 29 g of carbs.
Per 100 g = (29 ÷ 50) × 100 = 58 g.
If you eat 85 g of that baguette, you get 85 × (58 ÷ 100) = 49.3 g of carbs. The calculator also estimates energy from carbs using 4 kcal per gram.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using weight units without converting. If the serving is 2 fl oz or 2 oz, convert to grams before using the calculator. One ounce is about 28.35 g.
  • Confusing total carbs with net carbs. This calculator uses total carbohydrate from the label. If you track net carbs for keto, subtract dietary fiber separately.
  • Using cooked vs raw weight. Fries weigh more than the raw potato they came from because of absorbed oil; use the weight of the food as eaten, not the raw ingredient.
  • Ignoring portion size. A food can be low in carbs per 100 g but still deliver a large carb load if you eat 300 g of it. Always look at your actual portion.
